Birdsville Races

The Birdsville Races are one of Australia’s most iconic and unforgettable outback events. A true pilgrimage for race lovers, adventurers and festival-goers alike, the Birdsville Races have been running since 1882 and proudly celebrates more than a century of dusty rivalry and outback camaraderie.

Held annually on the first Friday and Saturday of September in remote Birdsville, Queensland, this two-day racing carnival affectionately known as the “Melbourne Cup of the Outback” brings together thousands of passionate visitors from across Australia and beyond. Spectators witness a thrilling 13-race program, beginning with Friday’s Akubra Big Red Day and culminating on Saturday in the coveted TAB Birdsville Cup, set against the stunning backdrop of the Simpson Desert.

More than just horseracing, the Birdsville Races offer a full-blown carnival atmosphere with lively social highlights that appeal to a wide audience. From the colourful Birdsville Cup Parade and the much-loved Fashions on the Field to the glamorous RFDS Gala under the stars, there’s something for everyone to enjoy.

A signature part of the overall experience is the Birdsville Races Roadies, Australia’s ultimate outback road-trip community and pilgrimage. Join fellow travellers from Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria, South Australia and beyond as you embark on the epic journey along legendary outback routes. Along the way, Roadies forge lifelong friendships, explore scenic regional hubs, take in unique outback attractions and enjoy exclusive membership rewards and rally-style vehicle stickers that celebrate your adventure. The journey itself becomes as memorable as the races, with opportunities to discover charming country towns, camp under star-filled skies, and create shared stories that last a lifetime.

Whether you’re focused on the heart-stopping races or the incredible community spirit and adventure of the road trip, the Birdsville Races stand as a bucket-list experience that blends sport, culture and the magic of the Australian Outback.
