A heatwave in Melbourne reduced the number of people passing through the doors, but those who attended were enthusiastic about planning a trip to Queensland with much discussion about which roads to take from Victoria. Most people were planning for June-August 2025, or sometime in 2026.
Popular destinations included Cape York, Cooktown, Cairns/Port Douglas, the Matilda Way with Longreach and Winton plus the Overlanders Way and Savannah Way. Specific attractions included Agnes Waters, the Lake Dunn Sculpture Trail, Cobbold Gorge, Undara Lava Tubes, The Tip and lots of inquiries about Carnarvon Gorge. There were also questions about the Wellness Way, Scenic Rim, K’gari, Bowen and Townsville.
People wanting to avoid the Bruce Highway were asking about the Great Inland Way and were talking about starting their trip May/June. Many were experienced travellers who have been to Queensland a few times and are contemplating trips through outback Queensland and across the Savannah Way. There were also a lot of first-time travellers, who were mostly couples aged over 60.
Many families and young couples were looking for inspiration and walked away with the Drive Queensland brochure, information on the Outback and the Tropical North Queensland map. More people were interested in travelling the coast, primarily the tropical north coast, while some were planning on coming in via the Northern Territory in winter and then heading south through the inland way.
Several people had previously only visited the Southeast corner but were considering more adventures to the north. Some families wanted to talk about the best trips with activities for young children and were interested in Brisbane, while Cape York Peninsula was popular with families planning for next year.
North Queensland continued to dominate the inquiries from caravaners with greater interest in the coastal route from Brisbane to the Tip and some fly-ins to Townsville and Mackay.
