People attending the Cairns Expo praised the informative maps and friendly knowledgeable Drive Queensland staff for doing a great job of selling the State to visitors over the Mother’s Day weekend. Saturday was the busiest day with rain and Mother’s Day celebrations reducing numbers on the other days.
People over 60 years of age, retirees and solo travellers were the majority on the first day. Some were planning their first trip, while the seasoned travellers were looking for new adventures for their second or third trip and intending to travel for a longer time.
Others were looking at new ways of exploring Queensland in their vehicles by changing from caravans to motor homes or seeking accommodation in cabins. There were lots of questions about pet friendly locations, station stays and free camping with a couple of inquiries for hot springs.
Most of the younger couples were researching their first trip with many of the first timers attending the Expo to purchase a van and do research for future trips. The families tended to look at short trips that were closer to home.
The Outback was a hot topic with many questions about Birdsville and Bedourie and the state of the roads. The Dinosaur Trail and The Tip were also popular. There was plenty of interest in the Savannah Way with some people heading all the way to Broome and many travelling as far as Darwin.
People were keen to travel for events, especially in the Outback. The Great Inland Way was more popular than the Pacific Coast after negative media reports on the state of the highway. There were still inquiries about coastal drives with the Townsville and Capricorn Coast brochures the most popular along the coast. The Drive Queensland magazine, Outback brochures, Drive North Queensland map and Birdsville brochures were in demand.
